Deaffest 2013 Results

There was a total of 6 awards up for grabs plus young Deaffest award, with the categories going to Best British Film, Best Documentary Film, Best International Film, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress. On Saturday 18th May, the winners of Deaffest 2013's 4th Film Gala Awards as judged by Clive Mason, Kalen Feeney, John Maidens and Maggie Ellis was announced!

Young Deaffest Film Award:

William Horsefield, 18 years old, for his film "I Won't Do That Again!" The Young Deaffest films were shortlisted and judged by Caroline O'Neill, and the award was presented by special guest Rachel Shenton, Hollyoaks actress.

Best Actor: 

Hal Draper, for his performance in Louis Neethling's 'Still Here'.  Lorna and Carmen, partner and daughter of the late Hal Draper accepted the award.  The Best Actor award was presented by Kalen Feeney.

Best Actress:

Aliya Gulamani, for her performance in Raabia Hussain's 'September 11'. The Best Actress award was presented by Joe Weaver, an artist who personally made the awards for the winners Deaffest 2013.

Best Director:

Ted Evans, for directing 'The End' that was released last year premiere night of Deaffest 2013. The Best Director award was presented by Paula Garfield, the Artistic Director of Deafinitely Theatre.

Best International Film: 

'Here In Silence' directed by 19 years old Jake Willis of Australia.  Medina Sumovic accepted the award on his behalf.  The Best International Film award was presented by Jean St Clair, Actress.

Best Documentary Film:

'Who Cares?' directed by Camilla Arnold.  The Best Documentary award presented by John Hay, OBE.

Best British Film:

'Champion of the World', directed by Bim Ajadi.  Rebecca Zelic, the main actress in the film accepted the award on the behalf of Bim.  The Best British Film presented by Paddy Ladd.


A massive congratulations to the winners of the 4th Film Gala Awards, but every film that was screened at Deaffest was incredible and inspiring. The 5th Film Gala Awards will be taking place in 2015, where Deaffest will celebrate its 10th anniversary.
